Since 1998, MATLAB has supported HDF-EOS, the Earth Observing System (EOS) extension to the Hierarchical Data Format (HDF). MATLAB users can access, process, or view HDF-EOS data sets or to construct new HDF-EOS products. They can work interactively or use MATLAB as a high-level programming language, and use the MATLAB Image Processing or Mapping Toolboxes. MATLAB 6.0, released in November 2000, incorporates the latest HDF 4 (Version 4.1r3) and HDF-EOS (Version 2.5v1) libraries. MATLAB provides a family of functions that parallel the C and Fortran application programmer interfaces (APIs) provided by the NCSA HDF and NASA HDF-EOS libraries. These functions enable full access to HDF-EOS data sets, via either interactive exploration or MATLAB programs (M-files). HDF and HDF-EOS data files can be read into or written from a MATLAB workspace. API-level functions in MATLAB include HDFPT, HDFSW, and HDFGD for interfaces to HDF-EOS point, swath, or grid objects, respectively. Both high level functions and a graphical user interface (GUI) are planned for future releases. Prototypes of high level functions (HDFINFO and HDFREAD) have already been developed and successfully demonstrated on HDF-EOS data sets from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA's Terra (EOS AM-1) satellite and HDF data sets from Landsat 7. Octave is a large and complex system, with more than 192,000 lines of C++ and C code, and more than 100,000 lines of Fortran code. We attempt to install each new release of Octave, and most of our systems have it installed, although not always at the latest version. It contains all the software tools chemical engineers, analytical chemists and other data scientists require to fully utilize their data and build predictive models.

Mixed-Mode Arithmetic. Mixed-mode arithmetic (e.g., arithmetic involving a logical and a double) dispatches to the function registered for the nonlogical data type. The logical is converted to that type and the operation proceeds. This behavior is fully backward compatible with how MATLAB works in MATLAB 6.0.

In MATLAB 6.5, sparse becomes an attribute of a MATLAB class. The class hierarchy diagram below represents the MathWorks long-range plan for sparse, where full and sparse are attributes of all MATLAB classes.

Testing for full arrays. You should no longer use the following statement to test whether an array is full (nonsparse). Because the sparse class has been removed in MATLAB 6.5, this statement now returns 1 for both full and sparse arrays:

Calling this function with one output specified in the call completes successfully. Calling the function with two outputs specified returns an error. Even though two outputs are declared in the function definition line, only one output is generated in the function body.
